1. J-Hoppers Kyoto Guesthouse (Kujo)
This sharehouse is just a five minute walk from Kyoto Station, a very convenient location. Dormitory rooms start at 2500 yen and private rooms from 3000, making it very reasonably priced while still being clean and comfortable. The shared bathroom is open 24 hours and there is free internet available.

2. Santana Guesthouse Kyoto (Nishiouji)
This guesthouse is in an area that manages to be both a residential area while still being very close to a sightseeing area and is staffed by very friendly people. Dormitories start at 2500 yen, and sometimes depending on the time of year you can get the whole building to yourself if you come as a group. It opened April 2015 but even so most days they have been completely filled, so make sure to make your reservations early.

The interior is decorated with modern, functional furniture so you'll naturally be drawn to hanging out with other travelers. 4. Nine Hours Kyoto (Kawaramachi)
This capsule hotel is about a 2 minute walk away from Kawaramachi Station. Lodging fees start at around 4900 yen, but if you need a nap you can go there for prices starting at 1000 yen as long as you check out by 9pm, making it very convenient for weary travelers. It's a very fashionable space with floors split by gender, making it very safe.

5. First Cabin Kyoto Karasuma (Shijo)

6. Khaosan Kyoto Theater (Kawaramachi)
This hotel is staffed by people who are well-traveled and they make it so that it's fun to hang out with fellow travelers. Dormitories start at 3000 yen per night, and the beds that are made with kimono fabric are worth taking a look at. It's in the center of Kyoto so you can walk home after a late night out.

This hotel is inside a ryokan building that was built more than 100 years ago. The dormitories start at 3000 yen, but there are private rooms too so it's perfect for a family trip. You can enjoy a relaxing trip in this area that has a very Kyoto-like atmosphere. You're allowed to check-out until noon, so you can sleep in even on the day you're leaving.
