2. Sushiko [Okachimachi, Ueno-hirokoji]
Sushiko is a sushi restaurant that stands in the Ameyoko area, alongside many other unique shops. It’s close to Ueno-okachimachi Station, so it’s easy to access. Whether you pick the maguro or the shellfish, they’re all fresh and delicious, and the rice is exquisitely soft.
Sushiko’s famous dish is their negitoro! Negitoro is finely chopped negi (green onions) placed on top of minced maguro. When placed in your mouth, the umami (Japanese savory taste) of the maguro floods your taste buds. When wrapped in nori (dried seaweed) and dipped in a little soy sauce, the saltiness of the soy sauce brings out the sweetness of the fat, making it even more delicious. The crisp negi add a unique accent to the texture.

Here, you can enjoy fresh maguro brought from Misaki Harbor (Misaki-ko) in Kanagawa Prefecture, as well as fresh fish from all over the country, at reasonable prices.
In particular, their Maguro no Nakaochi Gunkan (tuna scrape battleship roll sushi) is highly recommended. The hearty amount of maguro on this sushi is overwhelming! However, even with this amount, you’ll be surprised to know that the price is only 100 yen. Be sure to give it a try!

Hidezushi is right next to Ameyoko, and it is also the sushi restaurant right next to Sushiko! This alley, clustered with sushi restaurants, is quite interesting. This restaurant has their prices clearly displayed, so you know exactly how much you’re paying. Although the prices are quite low, in contrast, the quality of all their sushi is quite high!
Their fatty mackerel is an item that you definitely have to try. Each piece has 2 large slices on top that overlap to the degree where you might not even see the rice below! Also recommended is the Jo Sashimi Moriawase (premium fish assortment) set, where you can enjoy both fatty tuna and salmon.
