<Updated 5/20> Latest Information Regarding Closures and Cancellations Related to Covid-19

On February 26 the Japanese government announced that large-scale sporting and cultural events should be suspended, postponed, or reduced in scale for the following two weeks in order to prevent the spread of Covid-19. On the following day, February 27, the government also requested that all elementary, junior high, high, and special schools in the country temporarily close from March 2 to the beginning of the new school year in April. A number of universities have also canceled graduation and entrance ceremonies or other events involving a large number of people.

These measures was a response to an inquiry from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on February 25 regarding whether or not Tokyo should still host the 2020 Summer Olympics following the Japanese government's slow and unclear response to the outbreak of Covid-19. Some have accused the government of responding with hurried measures and allege that the current crisis might have been avoided if proper measures, such as banning entry for those who visited China around January or February, were enacted when the virus started to become a problem for China, Japan, and the rest of the world.

<Closings> Theme Parks

Tokyo Disneyland & Tokyo Disney Sea: February 29 (Sat) ~ mid-May
The park had been scheduled to reopen on March 16, but this was extended to early April, given the virus has not been contained.

Universal Studios Japan: February 29 (Sat) ~ mid-May
The date of opening has been pushed back from March 16 (Mon) to March 29 (Sun). Reopening will be "carefully decided while considering future conditions."

Sanrio Puroland: February 22 (Thur) ~ May 10
Operations were scheduled to resume on March 13 (Fri), but this has been pushed back.
