What Is Don Quijote?

The retailer started off small in 1978 when the founder Takao Yasuda set up a variety store called “Dorobo Ichiba” (Thief Market) in Tokyo’s Nishi Ogikubo neighborhood. After establishing the first actual Don Quijote store in Fuchu City, Tokyo in 1989, the company expanded at a dizzying pace. With 720 stores worldwide today, Don Quijote is undoubtedly Japan’s number one discount chain store!

Although it has grown in size, Don Quijote maintains some of the original factors that made it a global success and differentiate it from other similar businesses in all of its stores: reasonable prices, late-night business hours, handwritten POP signs, and its signature “compression display” high-density showcasing of merchandise that provides shoppers with amusement akin to an exciting treasure hunt.

All About MEGA Don Quijote Shibuya

With a total of seven floors, MEGA Don Quijote Shibuya is Tokyo’s largest Don Quijote. Established in 2017 as part of the “MEGA Don Quijote'' brand, the 24-hour MEGA Don Quijote Shibuya features all the elements mentioned above and more. With larger spaces and a wider selection of products, including items that you can't buy at other stores, it caters to a broad range of customers: locals in search of daily necessities, young people stopping to buy the latest trendy products, and travelers looking for astonishingly cheap yet high-quality Japanese items as a token of their visit to Japan.

Since its founding, the store has become a popular tourist attraction and a stop not to be missed for those wanting to explore a unique side of Japan’s shopping culture. Thanks to this popularity, they now even provide multi-language assistance for their customers! With each floor selling piles of unique products and thousands of interesting items you might have even never seen before, shoppers just need to get lost in this amusing shopping maze, let the zest for discovery guide them, and hunt for the best bargains!

A souvenir tour at MEGA Don Quijote Shibuya can’t be considered complete without a stop at the snack section on the second floor where your basket will be filled in the blink of an eye! A maze of colorful packaging hides one of Japan’s largest selection of treats - savory or sweet, you are sure to find something that suits your palate! Towers of boxes from popular chocolate brands, like Meiji and KIT KAT, stand next to walls chock-full of traditional Japanese sweets and Don Quijote’s original snacks. There’s even a “dagashi'' corner for those wanting to enjoy a moment of nostalgia and savor popular candies from Japan’s 1950s!

Pocky: Japan’s Beloved Snack Coming in a Staggering Variety of Flavors and With Gorgeous Boxes

Many of the snacks come in flavors that are unique to Japan and with packaging inspired by some of the country’s symbols like Mt. Fuji or “sakura'' cherry blossoms, making for amazing keepsakes and presents.

A fun example is “Pocky” which showcases a staggering array of flavors, even ones that can't be found overseas, and beautifully illustrated boxes. If you love Japanese green tea, we suggest you opt for the classic matcha Pocky or try its sakura version for a twist as it combines a cherry blossom flavored biscuit with refined Uji matcha chocolate coating. Or if you are looking for something uniquely Japanese, then go for the “Tokyo Amazake” which embodies the fragrance of Japanese sweet rice wine, or for “Tsubu Tsubu Ichigo” containing real strawberry chunks in the chocolate coating.

Ichiran Ramen Instant Noodles Box - Take Home One of Japan’s Most Popular Ramen

Shoppers’ favorites also include “Kinoko no Yama” and “Takenoko no Sato” bite-sized chocolate snacks shaped like mushrooms and bamboo shoots.
