Opened on May 24, 2024, Tamiya Plamodel Factory Tokyo is more than just a mecca for plastic model enthusiasts - it’s also a venue brimming with opportunities for connection and learning. 

Tamiya opened Tamiya Plamodel Factory Tokyo in order to contribute to model-building culture. For many years, the company focused solely on the research, development, and manufacturing of its models, deliberately refraining from direct sales to consumers. However, as entertainment options became increasingly diverse after the 2000s, the demand for plastic models began to decline. In response, Tamiya took it upon itself to actively promote plastic model culture, leading to the opening of this new facility.

Though we make it sound brand new, Tamiya Plamodel Factory Tokyo is actually over 16 years old. It first opened in Shimbashi, back when the area had many office workers who had grown up playing with toy models during the Showa period (1926–1989). Many of them would stop by after work to relive their childhood memories or purchase models as gifts for their children or grandchildren. The store even stayed open until 10 pm to accommodate these customers! However, as the years passed, this core demographic peaked and began to decline, with many reaching retirement age, resulting in fewer commuters to Shimbashi. 

With this new store that's located in another part of Shimbashi, Tamiya is adopting a fresh approach, aiming to create a flagship store that will serve as a central hub for promoting plastic model culture. The new Tamiya Plamodel Factory Tokyo store features expansive floor-to-ceiling glass panels, allowing passersby to easily admire the stunning products on display. Inside, well-lit and open exhibition spaces showcase a wide range of models, while a cafe area invites visitors to stop by for food and drinks.

With this new concept, Tamiya has succeeded in creating a welcoming space for promoting plastic model culture where anyone can casually drop in, attracting a broader customer base.

Everyone is welcome to look around, regardless of whether they’re familiar with plastic models or not. Visitors can explore Tamiya’s diverse product lineup and discover the various tools necessary for model building.
