1. Double Cream Sandwich (FamilyMart)

The Double Cream Sandwich (Whipped Cream & Custard) (138 JPY (incl. tax)) is a dessert with whipped cream and custard sandwiched between two round pieces of sponge cake. Pick it up and you’ll be amazed at how soft the sponge is. The rich whipped cream and light custard cream with just a hint of sweetness go perfectly together between the sponge cake. It looks voluminous, but both the sponge and cream are so smooth, I had no trouble finishing it.

The chocolate version of this product, the Double Cream Sandwich (Chocolate Cream & Whipped Cream)(150 JPY (incl. tax)), is an item with which you can enjoy multiple textures and rich chocolate cream. Plenty of smooth chocolate cream and whipped cream is sandwiched between the soft sponge cake—and there is even a small square piece of chocolate peeking out from the opening of the cake. The chocolate piece adds an accent to the textures. The moist sponge cake is flavored with cocoa, which enhances the sweetness and richness of the cream.

2. Choux à la Crème (7-Eleven)

This choux pastry sprinkled with white powdered sugar looks so luxurious, it’s hard to believe it is sold at convenience stores. The first bite releases the lovely aroma of the choux, which is filled with a rich custard cream made with carefully-selected eggs. I was surprised to find that the choux is completely filled with cream - no gaps! Custard cream is one of my favorites, and I really liked the cream in this Choux à la Crème (140 JPY (incl. tax)). It has a lovely eggy flavor.

3. Custard Cream Éclair (7-Eleven)

Like the Choux à la Crème, this Custard Cream Éclair (140 JPY (incl. tax)) is made with carefully-selected eggs. With this product, you can enjoy not only the richness of the custard cream, but also the harmony with the chocolate that it is topped with. The slightly bitter chocolate, the melt-in-the-mouth choux, and the custard cream all go perfectly together. This is so good that you’ll never tire of eating it.

4. Dora Mocchi (Strawberry & Milk) (Lawson)

The chewy pancakes making up the Dora Mocchi (Strawberry & Milk) (190 JPY (incl. tax)) are practically bursting with strawberry cream and whipped cream. The strawberry cream is sweet and tart with chunks of strawberry, and the whipped cream, blended with fresh cream from Hokkaido, is rich and goes well with the acidity of the strawberries. The pink color of the strawberry cream is adorable and makes this the perfect springtime sweet.

5. Chocolate Chip Crepe (with Chocolate Ganache) (Lawson)

The milk-based cream, wrapped in a thin crepe, has two types of differently-textured chocolate in it: smooth chocolate ganache and crunchy chocolate chips. What I particularly liked about this Chocolate Chip Crepe (with Chocolate Ganache) (165 JPY (incl. tax)) is that the ganache is bittersweet. Although this has both chocolate and cream, it is not overly sweet and leaves a pleasant aftertaste of rich chocolate.

6. Pre-Cut Swiss Roll (Flan Cream) (Lawson Store 100)

This may look like a regular Swiss roll, but this Pre-Cut Swiss Roll (Flan Cream) (108 JPY (incl. tax)) has an unusual flan flavor. Its low price is also a plus. The sponge cake melts in the mouth and is filled with flan-flavored cream and caramel sauce. When you eat it, you’ll be surprised at how much it really tastes like flan. It is cut into bite-sized pieces so that you can share it with a friend.

If any of the sweets introduced here piqued your interest, be sure to check them out the next time you are in a Japanese convenience store!
