Nagaoka’s Summer Festival Captivates a Crowd of One Million

The Nagaoka Festival, held annually from August 1 to 3, is one of the city’s most iconic summer events. It began in 1947 to honor the souls lost in WWII air raids and to pray for peace. The entire city comes alive with parades, traditional dances and music, and a vibrant procession of portable shrines

In addition, the Nagaoka Festival Grand Fireworks, held on August 2 and 3, is one of Japan’s top three fireworks shows, drawing over one million spectators over two days. On August 1 at 10:30 pm, marking the start of the air raid, colorless white fireworks are launched while the city’s temples ring their bells in remembrance of the victims.

The highlight of the fireworks show is the “Shosan Shakudama Hanabi,” with fireworks that expand to a diameter of 650 meters across the night sky.
