Hokkaido, Japan's northernmost area, has a late spring since it only starts warming up around May. If you're visiting Hokkaido this season, make sure to include a trip to a flower garden. From wide-open fields with flowers as far as the eye can see, to gorgeous English-style gardens, here are 10 of our recommendations.

1. Farm Tomita [Nakafurano]
Farm Tomita is one of the most well-known flower fields in Hokkaido. There's plenty of large flower fields in the Tomita area, but this is the most popular one.
Farm Tomita is most famous for their lavender in the summer, but there are also plenty of flowers available during the spring as well. The colorful flowers look like a beautiful carpet. It's gorgeous whether you see them up close or from afar.
There's a cafe and shop on the premises. There are dishes using Hokkaido ingredients, but the recommended thing to try is the lavender and melon soft serve ice cream. The refreshing flavor of lavender and the richness of the melon come together for a wonderful combination. You can enjoy it between May and October.

2. Yuni Garden [Yuni]
Yuni Garden is a facility designed after an English garden. The flower field is split up into 15 areas, and you can enjoy different flowers depending on the season. There's also an herb area where you can enjoy spring not just with your sight but also with your sense of smell.
In the spring, marguerites and and rape blossoms bloom. The fields are designed via calculations of when the flowers bloom and their colors, so they're so beautiful you'll be there for a long time without realizing. Of course, there are also cherry blossoms.
Yuni Garden is rather large and there are plenty of things to see. When you're tired from walking, you can sit and rest on a bench or in the grass. There's also a restaurant on the grounds, so you can go there if you get hungry.

3. Shiawase-iro no Oka [Takikawa]
Rapeseed blossoms are a yellow flower that bloom in the same period as cherry blossoms. Some varieties are edible, so it's a flower that the Japanese have deep connections to. The town is only about an hour away by train from Asahikawa Airport.
The rapeseed blossoms look gorgeous against the backdrop of the blue sky, but actually the blossoms are clusters of smaller flowers, so they are beautiful even close up.
Rapeseed blossoms can grow to a height of 1m. It's also used for cooking oil, so you can't go into the field itself, but you can crouch near the flowers and bask in an impressive scenery.

4. Shichiku Garden [Biei]
Shichiku Garden is a dream-like area with 2,500 types of flowers in an area of around 50,000 square meters. This facility was started by an one older lady with a flower.
Inside the garden, there are flower fields split up by whether they have one type of flower growing or many kinds. The flowers aren't grown with pesticide, and they're also not watered. They still bloom beautifully and energetically, so you'll understand the beauty of nature.
In this restaurant, you can enjoy meals made with Hokkaido ingredients and herb tea made from flowers and herbs taken from the garden. You'll feel quite elegant having a meal or tea as you gaze out at the flowers.

5. Higashi Mokoto Shibazakura Park [Ozora]
Moss phlox are flowers that bloom around the same time as cherry blossoms. They are colored similarly and are just as cute. The moss phlox in this park bloom for about a month in early May.
While cherry blossoms bloom on trees, moss phlox grow from the ground. You can enjoy the flowers up close. They have a different scent from cherry blossoms, and the entire park gets enveloped in a gentle aroma.
Something you should definitely try is the moss phlox soft serve ice cream. The ice cream has a texture like gelato and the ice cream has the color of the flowers. It has a gentle sweetness, so please try it while gazing out at the flowers.

6. Takino Suzuran Hillside National Government Park [Sapporo]
Takino Suzuran Park is in Sapporo. You can enjoy skiing, sleigh rides, and snowshoe walking here in the winter, but in the spring 230,000 tulips bloom beautifully.
The word "suzuran" in the park's name means "lily of the valley," and as the name implies, you can see them in different places throughout the park. Other than white lilies of the valley, there are also pink ones. They may not be as flashy as tulips, but their small, cute appearance will relax you.
There are plenty of activities in this park that you can enjoy, including fishing, cycling, mini-golf, and more. You can also play with huge balls in the grassy plaza. Freely enjoy yourself by rolling them around or riding on them, and then go home having exercised your childlike heart.

7. Ueno Farm [Asahikawa]
Ueno Farm is a garden in Asahikawa. It's easily accessible by a 15 minute walk from the station, and it's near the very popular Asahikawa Zoo, so it's easy to stop by. It has a romantic atmosphere that will make you feel as though you've entered a fairy tale.
There are lots of places for photographs in this park, such as the flowers blooming against the brick walls of the triangle-roofed tower. You can discover your favorite photography spot here by taking a walk around the wide grounds.
Inside Ueno Farm, there's a cafe constructed from an old barn. You can take a small rest with a light meal and a fruity drink if you get tired. The connected general goods store offers colorful original items.

8. Toyohira Park [Sapporo]
Toyohira Park in Sapporo is just a minute away the subway station, but it has a relaxed atmosphere that will make you forget you're in a big city. It's not a lrage park, but there are various flowers that will let you enjoy all four seasons.
Along with the standard spring flowers like tulips, you can also see the Asian fawnlily, a flower that is sometimes called "the spring fairy." The light purple flower blooms upside-down, and it does look like a fairy. The contrast of colors with the blue Corydalis ambigua that blooms next to it is a beautiful sight.
At the Midori no Center at the entrance of the park, they hold flower exhibitions and events to match the season. They also have lots of books about flora. The books are fun to look at even if you don't know the language because of the lovely photos.

9. Rokka no Mori [Tokachi]
One of Hokkaido's standard souvenirs is the Marusei Butter Sandwich. It's a very popular product with a cute floral package. The makers of that product, Rokkatei, created this park, Rokka no Mori.
The wide grounds cover about 100,000 square meters and the same flowers that are on the package bloom here. Trillium camschatcense, a white flower that looks like a lily, is a mysterious flower that takes 10 years to bloom! It has an elegant beauty that will fascinate you.
You can eat Rokkatei sweets in the restaurant on the grounds. There are dishes that you can only have here, so please stop by. They also have a full food menu.

10. Tokachi Hills [Tokachi]
This is a large nature themed park in Tokachi Farm. There are plenty of things for you to see here, including a vegetable farm, restaurant, chapel, petting zoo, and more.
In the center of Tokachi Hills, flowers bloom in a number of areas. Each area has its own theme, such as English garden or a waterside garden, so you can enjoy the various appearances created by the flowers.
They breed a type of pig from the Netherlands called Royal Mangalica. This breed can only be found here in Japan. You can also see ponies and goats, so it's a great place for children who like animals.
