The History of Japan’s Plastic Models
Toy models in Japan were mainly made out of wood until the early 20th century, when plastic became more widely used.
In the 1960s, Japan's booming economy sparked a surge in demand for plastic models, establishing the country as a pioneer in the plastic model industry.
During this time, Tamiya stood out as a star player.
Founded in 1946, Tamiya, Inc. began as a small business focused on wooden toy models. However, as various technologies progressed, the company gradually shifted its production to plastic models.
It wasn't long before Tamiya gained a reputation for its highly detailed designs, superior craftsmanship, and easy assembly. Driven by a relentless commitment to precision and a deep understanding of customer needs, Tamiya expanded its product range to include everything from military models to race cars, motorcycles, animals, and even crafts and educational kits.
Today, Tamiya’s models are beloved not just in Japan but around the globe, earning the company a top spot in the international plastic model industry.
The Birth and Evolution of Tamiya's Military Model Series
Tamiya’s military model series is one of the brand’s most iconic collections. It first launched in 1961 with the release of the 1/35 scale war tank model. This particular model didn’t just become a classic item in Tamiya’s lineup - it also set a new standard for the entire military model industry. The 1/35 scale has since become the gold standard for military models and remains a favorite among toy model hobbyists.
Designed With True-to-Life Precision
One of the defining features of Tamiya’s military models is their historical accuracy. The war tanks and aircrafts have intricate, strikingly accurate designs. Even the human figures look stunningly life-like, especially the ones based on real-life individuals.
These models do more than just re-enact moments from war history - they combine craftsmanship and artistry, and allow model builders to experience these aspects of various time periods as they assemble each piece.
Exclusive Military Paints and Specialized Painting Technology
Tamiya’s commitment to detail extends even to the paints they produce. For example, some paints in their military model range were specifically designed to replicate actual colors used by the military, allowing models to accurately reflect various eras and regions. To further enhance realism, Tamiya also offers specialized painting tools that allow builders to recreate natural elements like battlefield dust and mud.
Exploring the Wonders of Tamiya Plamodel Factory Tokyo
Opened on May 24, 2024, Tamiya Plamodel Factory Tokyo is more than just a mecca for plastic model enthusiasts - it’s also a venue brimming with opportunities for connection and learning.
Tamiya opened Tamiya Plamodel Factory Tokyo in order to contribute to model-building culture. For many years, the company focused solely on the research, development, and manufacturing of its models, deliberately refraining from direct sales to consumers. However, as entertainment options became increasingly diverse after the 2000s, the demand for plastic models began to decline. In response, Tamiya took it upon itself to actively promote plastic model culture, leading to the opening of this new facility.
Though we make it sound brand new, Tamiya Plamodel Factory Tokyo is actually over 16 years old. It first opened in Shimbashi, back when the area had many office workers who had grown up playing with toy models during the Showa period (1926–1989). Many of them would stop by after work to relive their childhood memories or purchase models as gifts for their children or grandchildren. The store even stayed open until 10 pm to accommodate these customers! However, as the years passed, this core demographic peaked and began to decline, with many reaching retirement age, resulting in fewer commuters to Shimbashi.
With this new store that's located in another part of Shimbashi, Tamiya is adopting a fresh approach, aiming to create a flagship store that will serve as a central hub for promoting plastic model culture. The new Tamiya Plamodel Factory Tokyo store features expansive floor-to-ceiling glass panels, allowing passersby to easily admire the stunning products on display. Inside, well-lit and open exhibition spaces showcase a wide range of models, while a cafe area invites visitors to stop by for food and drinks.
With this new concept, Tamiya has succeeded in creating a welcoming space for promoting plastic model culture where anyone can casually drop in, attracting a broader customer base.
Everyone is welcome to look around, regardless of whether they’re familiar with plastic models or not. Visitors can explore Tamiya’s diverse product lineup and discover the various tools necessary for model building. They can also experience the joy of assembling their own models or test their skills on the race track in the store's event space.
