1-Day Itinerary Example Using the Loople Sendai and Subway One-Day Pass

Sendai prospered under the rule of Date Masamune, a feudal lord of the Warring States period (1467 - 1590) who ordered the construction of Sendai Castle 400 years ago. Not only was Date Masamune active politically and militarily, but he was also one of the leading cultural figures of his time. The influence he brought was so great that it even led to the creation of the word “datena,” which means “stylish” or “fashionable” in Japanese.

Even today, there are several landmarks in Sendai that continue to stand as testaments to the Date family's strong influence, such as the site of Sendai Castle, Osaki Hachiman Shrine, and the Zuihouden Mausoleum.

This itinerary will take you through the layers of time, unveiling the rich history and culture of Sendai by touring magnificent spots related to Date Masamune, many of which are surrounded by lush greenery. Grab your Loople Sendai and Subway One-Day Pass at Sendai Station and start exploring right away by hopping on the Loople Sendai bus!

Zuihoden Mausoleum - A Spectacle of Gilded Accents and Ornate Architecture

Take the Loople Sendai bus from Sendai Station to Zuihoden Mausoleum (stop 4)

Total travel time: 13 minutes

As the mausoleum of Date Masamune, the founder of the Sendai domain, Zuihoden is a building representative of the Azuchi Momoyama-period (1573 - 1603) architecture and was designated as a National Treasure in 1931. Destroyed by fire during World War II, Zuihoden was rebuilt during the post-war period with vivid carvings and opulent gilding reminiscent of the original building.

The vast complex also comprises the mausoleums of Tadamune and Tsunamune, the second and third Date lords; a museum that displays excavated burial items; and several other highlights such as the Nehanmon Gate. Erected to represent enlightenment and the afterlife, it is decorated with intricate carvings of peony flowers, Chinese lions, and mythical creatures such as the “kirin,” dragon-like beasts believed to be messengers of good luck and herald the coming of an illuminated ruler.

Deep within the grounds is the most eye-catching structure, the mausoleum itself. The beautiful contrast between the black-lacquered figure of the mausoleum and sumptuous decor will surely leave you in awe!  There is no better place to experience the history and beauty of Sendai than the Zuihoden Mausoleum.

As it is located on wooded hillside grounds, visitors of Zuihoden will find themselves walking through verdant landscapes and under tunnels of ancient cedar trees. The suffused lighting and tranquil atmosphere will make exploring the mausoleum premises feel like a mystical journey!

Site of Sendai Castle - A Castle Steeped in History Turned Into a Beloved Park

Take the Loople Sendai bus from Zuihoden Mausoleum to Site of Sendai Castle (stop 6)

Total travel time: 13 minutes

Wander around the site of Sendai Castle, also known as Aoba Castle. The original castle was built by Date Masamune around the year 1602. Taking advantage of a mountain rising 115 meters above sea level that was in proximity of a river, a mountain forest, and a valley, the structure was erected to be an impregnable stronghold, naturally protected on all sides. In 1639, the Ninomaru (second enclosure of the castle) was also added at the foot of the mountain by Date Masamune’s successor, soon becoming the political center of the domain.

In 1873, the buildings in the Honmaru (main enclosure of the castle) were demolished by order of the Meiji (1868 - 1912) government. Most of the buildings in the Ninomaru followed suit and were destroyed by fire in 1882.

Today, the entire site of Sendai Castle has been converted into a beloved park. You can still see vestiges of the past through the restored stone walls and Wakiyagura (watchhouse).

Locals and visitors come in search of moments of harmony with nature as they stroll through the grounds mantled in greenery. The park is particularly lovely in spring when its 370 cherry trees are in bloom.

A must-visit attraction of the park is the equestrian statue of Date Masamune which is said to represent Lord Masamune’s perspective as he gazed at Sendai centuries ago. Stand in front of it and you’ll be able to see the very same breathtaking panorama of the city from above!

Osaki Hachimangu Shrine - A National Treasure Built to Protect the Sendai Domain

Take the Loople Sendai bus from Site of Sendai Castle to Osaki Hachimangu Shrine (stop 11)

Total travel time: 20 minutes

A testament of the Date family’s wealth and power, this shrine was commissioned by Date Masamune around the same time as he ordered the construction of Sendai Castle to enshrine Hachiman, the deity of war and patron of the Date family, to watch over the domain. Even in modern times, Osaki Hachimangu Shrine is still considered as a place that can ward off evil and beckon good fortune by the people of Sendai.

Master artisans from all over Japan were invited to craft it, making Osaki Hachimangu Shrine one of the finest examples of Azuchi Momoyama-period architecture. Set your eyes on the elaborate facade and marvel at the way the black lacquer enhances the glow of the gildings and how the painted carvings create an opulent pattern of auspicious symbols. Every design element conveys the majesty of the Sendai Domain.

The opulence of the shrine is beautifully complemented by the nature surrounding it. Visitors can immerse themselves in the solemnity of their vicinity as they pass through the vermilion “torii” gate and step onto its quaint stone paths lined with cedar trees.

The usually tranquil Osaki Hachimangu Shrine bursts with the excitement of the locals whenever traditional festivals are held on the shrine grounds. The most notable is the Dontosai Festival on January 14, when New Year’s decorations are burned in a giant bonfire. People gather around the sacred bonfire to pray for good health and the safety of their families for the new year. A half-naked procession called “hadaka mairi” is also performed heading towards this sacred fire, with many worshippers visiting for the occasion. If you happen to visit Sendai on the day, don’t miss the chance to see the lively festivities!

Jozenji-Dori Avenue - Stroll Under Sendai’s Prized Zelkova Trees

Take the Loople Sendai bus from Osaki Hachimangu Shrine to Jozenji-dori Ave./Sendai City Hall (stop 13)

Total travel time: 12 minutes

A symbol of Sendai, the tree-lined Jozenji-dori Avenue, welcomes you as soon as you step outside the Loople Sendai bus, inviting you to take a stroll within its natural tunnel created by 129 zelkova trees. With its 700 meters of splendid vegetation, Jozenji-dori Avenue runs east to west through the center of the City of Trees - serving as a place where people can relax while being surrounded by nature.

Jozenji-dori Avenue is dotted with sculptures by famous artists and is surrounded by shopping districts with a variety of restaurants, so there’s something for everyone to enjoy. The area also hosts numerous events throughout the year such as the Aoba Festival that livens the avenue up with its distinctive traditional “suzume” sparrow dances in early summer, the Jozenji Street Jazz Festival in autumn, and the SENDAI Pageant of Starlight in winter which is the largest light up event in the Tohoku region and features the giant zelkova trees embellished with 500,000 glittering lights.

Sendai Station - Savor Some of Sendai’s Specialties at Gyutan Corridor and Sushi Corridor

Take the Loople Sendai bus from Jozenji-dori Ave./Sendai City Hall to Sendai Station (stop 15 and 1)

Total travel time: 12 minutes

Sendai Station is where you can conclude the day by savoring some of the city’s delicacies at Gyutan Corridor and Sushi Corridor, two food areas themed around Sendai and Miyagi with a design reminiscent of the stone walls of Sendai Castle.

One of Sendai's most iconic foods is "gyutan", extra juicy beef tongue cooked over a charcoal grill. Head to the third floor of the station to find Gyutan Corridor, where you’ll find renowned gyutan restaurants all in one place. Enjoy this sublime culinary experience!

Adjacent to Gyutan Corridor is Sushi Corridor. Sendai is blessed with delicious seafood, and the restaurants here serve the freshest catches of the day. Sit at the counter to admire the sushi chefs at work - their skills will make your meal all the more memorable!

Sendai Station also has an exhibition corner with Miyagi Prefecture's traditional crafts and a statue of Date Masamune, so definitely stop by and take a photo! As the background changes depending on the season, you’ll get to see the statue embellished with Miyagi’s spectacular scenery.

Iroha Yokocho and Bunka Yokocho - Get a Taste of Japan’s Good Old Days at These Atmospheric Back Alleys

Take the Loople Sendai bus from Sendai Station to Aoba-dori Ichibancho Subway Station (stop 2)

Total travel time: 4 minutes

Both spots can be easily added to your tour of the city, so get ready to enter a parallel world as you sneak into Sendai’s narrow “yokocho.” These old-timey side streets and back alleys, densely packed with bars and restaurants, are an integral part of the nightlife of Japan. In Sendai, you can experience the full retro ambience and genuine warmth of yokocho at Iroha Yokocho and Bunka Yokocho.

The history of Iroha Yokocho dates back to the postwar period. Originally nothing more than makeshift stalls, the forerunner of Iroha Yokocho eventually evolved into an actual market. Today, Iroha Yokocho consists of two covered, parallel alleyways crammed with around 100 shops both old and new. Visitors will find anything from grocery stores, restaurants, and cafes to stores selling miscellaneous goods and bars.

With a history spanning over 70 years, Bunka Yokocho or “Culture Alley” also originated in the postwar period. The alley takes its name from the Bunka Cinema, a movie theater that served as a cultural center in the area and that unfortunately was destroyed during the air raids in 1945. Bunka Yokocho reopened in its current location in 1948. Today, guests can enjoy its 50 different establishments located across two alleyways that have a totally different vibe to Iroha Yokocho, as most of them only open after dark and they are strictly focused on serving food and drinks.
