Located near Nijo Castle in Kyoto, Gogyou is an eel specialty restaurant operated by Kyoto Marumochiya, well-known for its popular sweets, Mizumaru Mochi. It offers satisfying Unaju (eel over rice) and Hitsumabushi (finely chopped eel on rice). Only Japanese eels, a breed of eel that is strictly selected under strict standards in overseas countries, are used. The high-grade rice that goes well with eel is prepared from Kyoto's long-established Hachidaime Gihey. The sauce uses soy sauce made from the deep seawater of Muroto, Kochi Prefecture, and the sansho (Japanese pepper) is premium grape sansho from Hirano Seishoan in Wakayama Prefecture. You can enjoy eel with such attention to all details at a rather reasonable price. Local sake from Kyoto breweries and local beer are also available; the restaurant is perfect for sightseeing and special occasions. This is a place where you can experience Japan's chic culinary culture in a modern space.

It is a less than 1 minute walk from Yotsugi Station to this excellent, hidden eel restaurant in downtown. The specialty is trademarked [Tokuchu Katsuman], which customers will have to wait for about 40 minutes. Because we start to cook after being ordered. In spite that inconvenience, they will be happy when they taste it. The most recommended dish is Unaju (grilled eel with rice) of the branded [Bando Taro] eel. It has the crispy skin and melt-in-mouth soft meat as well as an elegant sweetness like wild eels. The sauce has been maintained for 36 years since the beginning of the restaurant, and goes best slightly hard rice. Kimowasa and bone senbei are served while the customer is waiting to have the Unaju served.
